Jekyll is the story of a London life guru, Amanda Hyde, who mysteriously disappears, leaving a trail of confusion and destruction behind her. As her cult followers try to make sense of their sudden abandonment, the audience is welcomed into the world of self-improvement, London drudgery, and impressive eye make-up. We speak to Georgia Bruce of OUDS about her role in the show and her move from Comedy to Drama.

How do you describe the show?

It’s a tough one to describe but I would say  “Dark, sexy, divised”, which is a weird way to describe it but because there are so many different voices involved, it hits a lot of odd things.

As an Oxford actor, how do you pick this show over all the others you have been involved in this year?

Well our university drama society (OUDS) did a national tour and this was one of the two shows. I auditioned for Jekyll and thought it was a really good project but it is something a little different for me because I do comedy normally. Mainly it was Sam Ward the director: I had always wanted to work with him because he’s done a lot of really good shows. It was quite a personal choice for me.

How does it differ from a comedy?

I get a little bit of comedy stuff in there but towards the end it gets a little bit more serious. For me it’s been a bit of a challenge but really good fun too and the cast have looked after me. Sam has been great. This is his style and he does it really well.

Did you do the show with a certain audience in mind. It resonates with me as a recent grad living in London. Does it work for others?

We tried for it to not be too London-Centric, but the city setup does work best for the story. It was what the writer, Howard Coase, used. In the devising, it was quite general but he took it in that direction. For me, it works.
